1.   Narrative Engineers

Mission: Discover knowledge holders and document their experiences through thoughtful interviews using our methodology.

Skills needed:

  • Active listening and asking clear, respectful questions.
  • Building trust with people from different backgrounds.
  • Following interview procedures and recording accurate field notes.

2.   Community Researcher

Mission: Gather reliable background information about people, places, businesses, and histories to support the collection.

Skills needed:

  • Finding and assessing relevant sources.
  • Checking facts and recording where information comes from.
  • Organising findings into clear research notes.

3.   Evidence & Archive Assistant

Mission: Document and organise photographs, records and recordings so their origins and connections to each story remain clear.

Skills needed:

  • Careful file organisation and consistent naming.
  • Recording descriptions, dates and source details.
  • Handling private or sensitive material responsibly.

4.   Transcription & Translation Volunteer

Mission: Prepare accurate transcripts, translations and subtitles that preserve the speaker’s meaning.

Skills needed:

  • Strong listening and writing abilities in the relevant language.
  • Attention to wording, names, and cultural context.
  • Checking timecodes and working with transcription or subtitle tools.

5.   Camera & Sound Volunteer

Mission: Capture interviews and supporting footage with clear images and sound.

Skills needed:

  • Camera framing, lighting, and basic equipment setup.
  • Recording and monitoring audio.
  • Working respectfully with participants and the interview team.

6.   Video Editor

Mission: Turn recorded material and agreed paper edits into coherent, engaging documentaries and short videos.

Skills needed:

  • Using video-editing software.
  • Creating natural pacing, continuity, and narrative flow.
  • Following source timecodes and preserving the meaning of testimony.

7.   Content Writer & Researcher

Mission: Turn documented material into accessible stories, articles, and publication drafts for editorial review.

Skills needed:

  • Clear writing and thoughtful storytelling.
  • Working accurately from interviews and supporting sources.
  • Revising drafts in response to feedback.

8.   Graphic Designer

Mission: Create visual materials that communicate the project clearly and consistently.

Skills needed:

  • Using graphic-design tools.
  • Applying readable typography, layout, and visual hierarchy.
  • Preparing designs for digital platforms and print.

9.   Social Media Manager

Mission: Use our social channels to share approved work, engage people, and encourage participation.

Skills needed:

  • Planning content and adapting it to different platforms.
  • Writing engaging captions and responding respectfully.
  • Using audience feedback and engagement data to improve communication.

10.   Press & Publicity Volunteer

Mission: Help journalists and media outlets discover and accurately communicate our work.

Skills needed:

  • Writing concise press releases and media pitches.
  • Identifying relevant journalists and publications.
  • Building media relationships and following up professionally.

11.   Community Liaison & Outreach Volunteer

Mission: Build local relationships, introduce the project, and connect the team with potential participants.

  • Communicating the mission clearly.

  • Arranging introductions and recording follow-up needs.

12.   Event Organiser

Mission: Help deliver welcoming screenings, community conversations and restitution events.

Skills needed:

  • Organising venues, equipment and event logistics.
  • Welcoming participants and supporting their practical needs.
  • Working calmly with others during live events.

13.   Volunteer Coordinator

Mission: Help volunteers join, understand their responsibilities, and remain supported throughout their involvement.

  • Listening to volunteers and coordinating guidance when needed.

14.   Partnerships Assistant

Mission: Develop organisational collaborations that support the project’s delivery, use, and expansion.

  • Presenting clear proposals for collaboration.
  • Maintaining relationships and tracking agreed next steps.

15.   Grant Writer & Researcher

Mission: Identify suitable grants and prepare credible applications from approved project plans, evidence, and budgets.

Skills needed:

  • Understanding funding criteria and eligibility requirements.
  • Writing clear objectives, activities, and expected outcomes.
  • Working with budgets, supporting documents and deadlines.

16.   Fundraising & Sponsorship Volunteer

Mission: Build relationships with donors and sponsors to secure resources and sustain their support.

Skills needed:

  • Identifying and approaching suitable supporters.
  • Explaining the project’s value and making clear requests.
  • Maintaining donor relationships and recording commitments.

17.   Technology & Digital Platforms Volunteer

Mission: Maintain and improve the digital tools that support preservation, team workflows, and public access.

Skills needed:

  • Relevant experience in web development, databases, automation, or AI.
  • Testing systems and resolving technical problems.
  • Applying appropriate access controls and documenting changes.

18.   Administration Assistant

Mission: Keep administrative and financial records organised under the organisation’s supervision.

Skills needed:

  • Maintaining accurate documents and spreadsheets.
  • Organising receipts, expenses and budget information.
  • Working confidentially and following agreed approval procedures.
